Lizards From Afar featured artist on Inside My Head Podcast

Posted in Blogroll, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 22, 2010 by Sir Pent

Jen, star and proprietor of the Inside My Head Podcast, has dedicated an entire show to our favorite band…us. She does a great job of retelling the history as culled by me, Sir Pent. She spins several of our tunes and interweaves the tale of our exploits from burgeoning college-rock (under-appreciated) geniuses to our glorious rebirth in the new millennium.  You also get to hear birds in the background, which is also cool.

Much love and appreciation to Jen and the good work she does to bring music and entertainment to the world.

New Song: Pickles

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 22, 2010 by Sir Pent

As the current run of LIZARDS FROM AFAR comes closer to an end, we have begun wrapping up some songs we had in various stages of completion. By wrapping up, I mean harassing Chopper Newt until he mixes them just to shut us up. Ya see, Chopper Newt has a knack for taking our half-assed creations and turning them listenable. As Frank says in Father Of The Bride, “He is a genius and we need his mind.”

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of adding the final touches to a song I wrote called PICKLES. This is an incredibly silly song of the order we have not attempted in a long time. Back in the day I was more successful at sliding these ridiculous creations past the guys. Since the reunion the requirements have been more stringent.

Not this time. I caught the Gecko napping and he composed music for Pickles. Music so annoyingly catchy that the song would not be denied. It needed to live, breath and rock. Is it silly? Yes. It’s still fantastic. Give it a try.

Block Party on Insomnia Radio’s Daily Dose

Posted in General with tags , , , , on February 26, 2010 by Matt

Our song “Block Party” is featured today on Insomnia Radio’s Daily Dose. IR plays a lot of great songs. Other than our own tune (obviously) I recommend yesterday’s Daily Dose “Whaley” by a band called Sentinel. Dreamy stuff!

–Visit Insomnia Radio–

Here’s what Ivan (aka Gator), who wrote the lyrics to “Block Party,” says about the tune:

“Block Party was written in response to some of Serpent’s (aka Bob Geisert) great work – I think it may have been Just a Girl. I decided I wanted to write a sweeter song than the ones I normally do, and, well–the suicidal absinthe mystic won out again. It’s a depressing little number about a terrible fear and the horrible, crippling guilt survivors often feel. You know, a real party song. I remain amazed that the other Lizards picked up on it and felt as strongly about it as me, but I’m glad they did. I think it’s some of our best work yet.”

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down – RCRD LBL Radio

Lizards From Afar have a new song–actually an old song–that I’m close to releasing, but in the meantime I heard this group on RCRD LBL and thought I’d share. I dig their sound–very typical indie, both pop and melancholic at the same time. What could be better on a Thursday morning.

Radio Orphans, who have previously been kind enough to play Lizards music on their fine podcast, have graced us with another spin.  They’ve included Dance Theodora as part of their latest cast, number 217.  Please head over to the Radio Orphans site and check it out – quite a long list of cool songs on the show, a perfect way to ease into the new week.

The “We Need A New Post” Post

Posted in General with tags , , , , on April 16, 2009 by Matt

Yeah, we need a new post like we need a hole in the head.

There’s not a whole lot happening in Lizardom recently, at least on the surface. Below, in the subterranean parts of our realm, new music is always percolating upward, mostly at the initiative of Sir Pent and me. No one but Chopper Newt is sure what is happening with the tracks from our highly anticipated (cue crickets chirping) return “Bloomington Democracy.” Since he (very helpfully) took over all mastering on that venture, he has all the work sitting on his computer, and he is in charge of any final masters and releases. But we all have the demo mp3s on Reverbnation!

Keeping on keeping on, several new songs are working their way down the pipe. These are different and, if I might say, more experimental. Certainly they represent a greater degree of technical proficiency as we become more used to working together again. They also represent a very unusual turn of events as I, the Gecko, take lead vocals on several. My favorite work is an indie ballad written by Sir Pent and composed by me entitled “Outside.” This tune is finished but for Pent’s drumming. I know he’s frightened to perform this song since there are three time signature changes… and I don’t think LFA has ever even tried ONE timing change in a song. I’m hoping he can pull through or I’ll have to release it with drum loops, and that would just be no fun.

We also have an excellent punk tune about Empress Theodora (you remember her, don’t you?), who ruled alongside Justinian back in the 6th century. I was never a fan of Justinian (too damned pious for my tastes, of course), but Theodora was a riot. At any rate, this song rocks, particularly since we switch from A major to A Byzantine in the middle of the song (I mean, we just had to, right?). I also did a lead vocal, but we’re all waiting to see if Newt will condescend to sing it instead, since LFA just isn’t the same without his voice. It’s like Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant.

Next is a jazz punk piece entitled “104 Degrees of Separation,” which might never see the light of day, despite the fact that it is awesome because Pent ignores me every time I request that he record a drum track. He’s like that sometimes.

Most likely the soonest new song to appear will be a short rock ditty a la the Monkees, once again written by Sir Pent, entitled “I Know A Girl.” It’s a disturbing but still pop piece about stalking a girl (what else). And not in the good way. As of now, Pent himself performs lead vocals, doing a convincing, but still disturbing, impersonation of Davy Jones.

Hang in there Lizard Fans. (cue more chirping of crickets.)
